Inspiration and composition
Microspectare  is an immersive film that transforms microscopic imagery into a sensory experience, set to an evocative soundscape. The visuals, captured using laboratory microscopes, reveal intricate patterns and colours from everyday organic materials, including onion skin, butterfly wings, and pond water samples. The footage was meticulously curated and layered to uncover the hidden beauty of these microscopic worlds.

The soundscape, primarily created by van der Linde, combines synthesizer-generated audio with transformed everyday sounds, such as bubbling coffee pots and dripping water. This pairing of auditory and visual elements aims to immerse the viewer in a multidimensional experience of discovery and wonder. The creative process was deeply collaborative, with both artists contributing to the selection and interpretation of images and sounds.
Connection to Mysteries in Science
Microspectare  aligns with the theme of Mysteries in Science by unveiling the beauty and complexity that often escapes the naked eye. The project emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living things and challenges viewers to reevaluate their perception of nature.

By merging scientific imagery with art, Winkelman and van der Linde demonstrate how creativity and curiosity can inspire reflection on humanity’s place within the natural world. They hope their work fosters a sense of wonder and motivates audiences to reconnect with the systems and patterns that shape life, ultimately encouraging environmental awareness and responsible care for the planet.

About Evy Winkelman & Luna van der Linde
The Artists
The Netherlands
Evy Winkelman and Luna van der Linde are an interdisciplinary duo whose collaboration bridges the fields of microbiology and fine arts.
Winkelman, a Liberal Arts and Sciences student specializing in microbiology, brings her fascination with the natural world and its unseen complexities to the project. By combining art and science, her aim is to foster appreciation and reconnection with the beauty and intricacy of nature.

Van der Linde, a second-year Fine Arts student, focuses on the relationship between humans and the natural world in her practice. Her work often explores how human perception of nature influences behaviours and attitudes. The duo’s shared interest in reconnecting people with the natural world through innovative approaches led to their collaboration on Microspectare, blending their unique perspectives and skills.
