Inspiration and composition
The Elephant in the Room  is a polarized light microscopy image of articular cartilage from an Asian elephant, showcasing the intricate organization of collagen fibres within the tissue. The vibrant blue and white hues emerged from light refractions caused by artefacts during sample preparation. Although van der Zwart speculated these artefacts might be linked to the placement of protruding bone fragments, the exact source remains uncertain—a reflection of the unpredictable beauty in scientific exploration.

The image’s journey from lab to exhibition began when van der Zwart noticed its striking visual qualities. Captivated by the vibrant colours and patterns, she saved it for its aesthetic appeal rather than its scientific accuracy. A lab colleague, equally drawn to its artistic potential, encouraged her to share the image beyond its original context. Their mutual appreciation highlighted the surprising artistry in science, transforming the microscopy image into a celebration of serendipity and creativity.
Connection to 'Mysteries in Science'
This piece captures the mystery and complexity of biological structures, revealing how unexpected moments in research can lead to new perspectives. By transforming an artefact into an artwork, van der Zwart invites viewers to consider the hidden intricacies of life and the beauty found within the unplanned.
Through The Elephant in the Room, van der Zwart bridges the gap between science and art, demonstrating how creativity and curiosity can uncover connections that go beyond data. She hopes the work sparks reflection and wonder, encouraging audiences to explore the beauty of the natural world from both scientific and artistic viewpoints.
