Inspiration and composition
Willemsen presents two distinct art pieces inspired by her academic experiences, in virology, microscopy, and infectious disease modelling.
Virulent Scream is an expressionistic triptych that invites the audience to confront the vast realm of infectious diseases and virology. In the central panel, an agonized scream releases a virus from the mouth, while the side panels depict a withering funeral flower and decaying bird, symbolizing the universal impact of viral diseases on plants, animals and humans alike. Created sustainably with recycled print paper, charcoal and acrylics, this piece aims to unsettle the detached viewer and bridge the emotional gap between scientific facts and human experience.

Invisible  offers a layered and immersive depiction of viral infections, capturing their chaotic and cryptic nature. Created with salvaged materials—acrylics, markers, wall filler, and scrap paper on a torqued canvas—the artwork reflects the fragmented and often incomplete understanding of these microscopic phenomena. Its unsettling palette and cryptic annotations evoke the duality of fascination and frustration inherent in studying the invisible world of viruses.
Connection to 'Mysteries in Science'
Invisible  embodies the scientific enigma of infection—the interplay of viral manipulation and host response, much of which remains shrouded in mystery. Willemsen describes the piece as “a reflection of how little we truly understand about the microscopic world”, emphasizing the endless pursuit of knowledge and the uncertainties that propel scientific discovery. Virulent Scream, on the other hand, invites the viewer to reflect on the harsh realities of viral infections from a position of privilege, where access to healthcare offers solutions many lack. Together, these works encapsulate the theme of 'Mysteries in Science' using abstract forms and unsettling colours to convey the beauty and challenge of exploring the unknown.
Through her art, Willemsen invites viewers to confront the limits of human understanding, to break free from detachment, and engage with the pressing global realities of disease and discovery. Her work celebrates the persistent curiosity and resilience that drive science forward.
