Inspiration and composition

Hidden Networks is a personal and scientifically inspired analogue photograph tryptic featuring Isabel’s father interacting with nature, and in particular with tomato plants. The images highlight a symbolic cyclic connection between two systems: the human system, represented by her father nurturing the plants, and the plant system, which in turn sustains human life by providing nourishment. Corado Ramis emphasizes the intricate biochemical and molecular interactions that occur within and between these systems—processes invisible to the naked eye but critical for life.

The choice of medium –analogue photography– holds a significant meaning in Corado Ramis's work. She draws a parallel between the gradual unveiling of a developed photograph and the stepwise nature of scientific discovery, highlighting the beauty in both processes as they unfold over time with patience and curiosity. Her compositions go beyond simply capturing the interplay of dependency and reciprocity, such as humans nurturing tomatoes, and in turn, being nourished by their fruit. These images illustrate a cyclical relationship of mutual reliance while subtly alluding to broader systems—solar energy, soil microorganisms, and even the atomic particles derived from stars—that collectively sustain life on Earth.

Connection to 'Mysteries in Science'

The artwork delves into the mysteries of cellular and molecular networks that underpin life, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humans and nature. By juxtaposing the visible and invisible, Hidden Networks  invites viewers to reflect on the countless interactions shaping existence, from cellular processes to ecological systems. The image encapsulates the essence of scientific inquiry—seeking understanding through observation, analysis, and interpretation.

Through her work, Corado Ramis hopes to inspire curiosity and foster a greater appreciation for the microscopic elements that connect all life forms. She envisions art as a bridge to make science more engaging and accessible, reminding audiences that every simple moment is part of a larger, wondrous system of interactions.

About Isabel Corado Ramis

The Artist

Spain

Isabel Corado Ramis is a Master’s student in Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences at the Graduate School of Life Sciences, Utrecht University. Currently undertaking an internship in cancer research and live microscopy, she bridges her scientific expertise with her artistic passion. Through analogue photography, Isabel captures the unseen yet profound interactions that shape human life and nature. Her debut project, Hidden Networks, shows the fusion of art and science, transforming complex biological concepts into visual narratives that are both tangible and relatable
